Why It Matters
During our daily shower and bath routines, the skin can absorb trace amounts of chemicals dissolved in the water, such as:
- Chlorine and chloramines
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Heavy metals and byproducts
A study in Environmental Health Perspectives found that showering can expose you to as much chlorine and chloroform — through both skin and inhalation — as drinking several liters of unfiltered tap water. - Formation of Toxic Byproducts
- Chlorine reacts with organic matter (like sweat or soap residue) to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).
- Long-term exposure to these compounds has been linked to cell damage and increased cancer risk, particularly in the bladder and colon.
- Possible Hormonal Effects
- Some research suggests that chloroform, a DBP, may interfere with hormone function and detoxification enzymes when absorbed through the skin or inhaled.
